We are back in Alberta and just had a wonderful weekend skiing with our grandkids, made possible because by your excellent surgeries on our respective hips. We can advise that we are both playing some of the best golf we have played in years and recently took down the perennial winners of the mixed couples golf, season long championship in Punta Mita. Thanks for everything.
Hey Doc! Nancy and I just wrapped up 5 days of skiing at Steamboat. Knees felt great! 5 months since the right one and 9 months for the left. No more pain with every bump and turn from bone on bone! Muscles are a little sore and tight, but that’s usual after skiing. Feeling great!
Just thought to let you know that my new knee continues to be beyond amazing.
I am able to rip it on triple black diamond ski runs. No pain and complete control. Photo of me and my buddies at Polar Peak Chair at Fernie last week. There is no easy way down!
I want to thank you for all you have done for me. Right hip replacement on July 9 2025. Just returned from a trip to Australia. Walked and played 7 golf courses in 10 days. No hip issues at all.
I’m fine . MIRACULOUSLY… no pain. Surgery discomfort but all that excruciating pain in gone . I’m so grateful ❤️ Sincerely appreciated
Everything is great I’m very comfortable and moving around as instructed thank you!!
Good afternoon! Thank you for taking care of me. As of today, I am doing well, with minimal pain just by taking Tylenol/Advil as instructed.
So far I am doing very well!! thank you for the pictures. Thanks again for everything!
Thank you for the image and your expertise for this procedure. So far pain mainly at the incision area but managing fine.
All very good. Best sleep in months w/ minimal back pain, as you predicted.
Progress by the book or slightly better. Go Bills!
Big smile on Karen’s face, she says she’s turned the corner. Optimistic. Much less pain, much better mobility. Thanks for slotting us in so quickly!!
Currently I am doing 15 minutes on the bike and some walking at the gym. I’m also doing exercises from physio
Walking is fairly comfortable and my gait looks good!
So much less pain than before surgery! Thank you so much!
Recovery is going very well. Am able to bend my knee to about 125 degrees. Started driving after three weeks – could have done it sooner but there was no need. Am walking well – better than before my knee replacement. Am able to do stairs in the usual manner, rather than sidestepping one at a time. Not taking any pain meds. Sleeping well. Really liked the pain medication pump. There was zero pain for the first five days and not much pain thereafter.
I am doing good. I am stable on my feet & have no pain. I am doing a lot of moving around at a safe pace in the house. Thank you for checking in with me & to all of you for making a big difference in my quality of life!!
Thanks for checking in. I believe my recover has gone very well!!
I am not in much pain at all. Typically a “1-2” most days. At times, my hip feels heavy
I experienced very little swelling and bruising…. Lots of icing with the Game Ready machine. While expensive to purchase, it sure seems to be effective
Pain has been managed with Tylenol and Advil. No need for the opioid prescription
I completed my first “workout” with my trainer yesterday. It was low key and designed around movement for my hip. I have not experienced any increased swelling or pain as a result of the workout. We have scheduled 2 workouts per week.
Again, thank you for your teams excellent care and expertise
Feeling pretty good. Have some pain but manageable with Advil and Tylenol. Have been walking and doing stretches and believe I can increase to 3000 steps this week. Thank you so much for your expertise!
I’m doing GREAT! Compared to my traditional right hip surgery this is a miracle! Some days are Tylenol days and other not. Took one hydromorphine and barfed, no more for me. Some days you cannot walk off the stiffness so you rest it next day raring to go.
I feel like I’m doing great and I sincerely appreciate it.
Take care,
Your follow up is amazing and much appreciated. I’ll get the X-Ray this week and send it to you. All good with the hip BTW 🤠. Ran into a guy at the Gym who got 2 hips from Craig 3 months ago. We were both commenting how lucky we are 😎
Thank you Doc for making my life so good !
Thanks for the follow up. I wish our diarization system at the law firm was as good. I think I am doing great . No pain and I am not taking any pain meds. No limp. Went and saw Judy and she said I have good flexibility. On my very scientific test of recovery (whether I can stand on the leg and pull my pants on) I have passed with flying colours. I am starting to exercise again this week. I have the x-ray requisition from my Doc and plan to get it done next Sunday. Thanks again for the info and thanks again to you both for fixing me up.
Good morning… Stan is feeling very well. After that first week post-surgery, he stopped all pain meds (he never did need the hydromorphone) only Tylenol and Robaxacet.
The deep hip pain was gone immediately. The muscles in the front of his leg were sore and tender the first week but also now @ 0-1 pain. His back and knee pain is also improving to a level of 1-2. He feels so much better. Started sleeping better after the 5th day after surgery.
He is not exceeding the step count as recommended… is using the ice machine every 30 minutes off/on most days from 9am til 9pm.
We can’t thank you enough for all the care, concern, and expertise your team has shown us. We are blessed and thankful to the LORD for you all.

Thanks for checking in. I think the recovery is going well. Been riding a recumbent bike almost every day and icing for 20 minutes after (I have the machine so I might as well use it a little). I am wearing compression to limit swelling. Trying to balance activity with the amount of swelling. I think it is going well. I will see Jeff in Calgary on Tuesday to see what the next stage of my recovery is going to be like. Probably strengthening now.
Thanks for the new knee. At first, I was wondering what I did, but now, already it is better than before. Thanks for streamlining the process to make it easy and flow well.
It is going very well as of last weekend. I believe the Celebrex allowed for me to get enough range to finally get on the bike, and I’ve really been able to get the fluid out of the joint. I’m at about 105-110 degrees and pain is way off. Thanks for the note.
I’m feeling pretty good. I started ice/compression and walked to dinner. No trouble. I’m glad I have the walker. I’m just a bit slow. I ordered a wheelchair to take me right to my seat on the airplane. My experience with you and your team was excellent. I will be working from home this Thursday and Friday and may make my way to the office starting Monday depending on how I feel but won’t work full days for now. All the best.
Thank you for the quick response. The incredible service continues! Our return flight is now on United Airlines Denver direct to Maui on Wednesday, January 14. Thank you and your wonderful Team for everything.
Your follow-up and advice are incredible & timely. You are indeed a remarkable individual.
I’m so pleased that I used your services.
Thanks again for this incredible attention to my situation. My utmost appreciation to your team.
I cannot begin to think where I would be today had I not started emailing you for the beach in Mexico merely 3 weeks ago!
My progress has been phenomenal. To be more specific, I will answer your question below:
· Are you having much pain? Minimal, mostly when standing from sitting or lying or when I am tired. This is pressure and discomfort; I would not go as far as calling this ‘pain’.
· Are you taking anything for pain? I have reduced down to once or twice a day, Advil with Tylenol Arthritis, less and less daily.
· How much activity are you doing now? Building up daily, up to 2000 steps, up and down the steps once or twice daily, limited short outings.
· I’m hoping to start limited driving next week.
Good afternoon and thank you for checking in… Thank you again for all your expertise, care, and speed with getting Stan in.
Hi. Thanks for reaching out. It is gradually improving so I’m hopeful all will be well. I’ll let you know how it feels tomorrow after icing and elevating all evening. I sure was impressed with your whole operation!
I have just gotten home from having my X-ray done and going to the Glencoe for a very modest workout. I feel really fortunate because I think I had a pretty easy recovery. Apart from one week where I had a truly alarming amount of swelling, since then I have good range of motion and very little pain. I see Judy on Wednesday so I will get the official confirmation then, but hopefully all is well. Your team is amazing, and I am so glad I elected to have the revision knee surgery in Denver so I could get the upgraded joint.
Thanks again and hopefully I won’t need a check up in the future.
My replacement rocks!! Sadly, my other hip is giving me grief but Canada is a little slow to have broad access to anterior approach. I couldn’t be happier with my choice to have you do the surgery and, frankly, I talk about you and your staff frequently. I’ve referred a number of people to you. I have a lot of injuries and long term osteo issues including a reconstructed knee so I can quite accurately compare. There is absolutely no pain that compares to bone on bone hip pain. It is unrelenting soul sucking pain. Thank you for taking that away. I was back to normal in 5 days and fully back to work in less than 10 days. Miracle.
My name is Heather and want to send kudos to my surgeon in Colorado! I’m from Canada and while visiting my son in Castle Rock, Colorado, December 2022, I had an assessment with my surgeon who was referred by my son’s friend. At this time I was limping with pain, had one steroid injection which didn’t really help and was about to be referred to an orthopaedic surgeon in Newfoundland, Canada (referral would be at least a one year waitlist with a possible another 2 years before surgery) After his assessment, the doctor offered to replace my knee as on outpatient (at the time not possible in my home province) and do a minimally invasive procedure that helps speed up post up recovery! Two months later February 23, 2023 (after visiting my Family Doctor who supported my decision, forwarded pre op bloodwork and X-rays, and had referral for physio post up) I returned to Colorado for this surgery and have not looked back since. I was faithful to post op instructions and physio having full leg extension and good bend quickly although it took time for me to figure out how much activity was right for me. A year out, I was extremely pleased with my progress with just some stiffness but no pain. It’s now almost 3 years and I’m back to all of my previous activities (this past month I went ice skating, snowshoeing and skidooing without any issues). If I had waited and followed the process here in my province I would possible still be waiting and would have not only lost 3 years of active life but my health would have continued to deteriorate! I highly recommend my surgeon and his team if you are in need of a joint replacement!
I was asked to give an account of my hip replacement surgery. I was in constant pain whether standing, sitting or laying down. There was a 3 year waiting list to get an operation from Alberta Health Care (AHC). A farmer from my area had similar pain and from an acquaintance in Arizona was recommended to a surgeon in Colorado. The farmer had both hips done and resumed his active life very quickly. I went to the same surgeon as well and I too recovered quickly and I have a full range of motion, no pain and good leg strength. At the time AHC performed hip replacements with the posterior surgery technique. Large muscles are cut and it takes time for them to reknit and heal. My surgeon used the newer anterior surgery technique which is less invasive and cuts no muscles. The better surgery method certainly helped me but the surgeon was also a big factor in my successful operation. I believe the surgeon is critical to outcome. A fellow my age got an AHC operation which was not a success. He will never walk right or without a cane. Not a direct comparison of course but it brings home the realization hip replacements are not guaranteed of success. I wholeheartedly recommend my surgeon in Colorado. I also found Jill in their office extremely helpful. She told me what I had to do pre op, what to expect and even where to stay! She would be my first call.
How nice to hear from you. I am well. No problems with my hip. Still active and enjoying travel, etc. I think I saw you at the 8 year mark or so. If anything arises I will be sure to contact you. I still recommend you to people.
I have had two hip surgeries and other replacement surgeries in my recent time frame. One hip done at your clinic and one done in Calgary, Alberta. No comparison at all between the two operations. My hip surgery at your clinic was head and shoulders above my experience in Calgary. From the moment we first started discussion to the many follow up interactions. The results of your operation were superb with no long term issues. I work on both hips daily to ensure continued flexibility. My Calgary operation has not been as successful over the long term with some pain and flexibility. The issue in receiving follow up from my Calgary surgery is it’s really not available or appreciated. Your process and service is outstanding and as a consequence I sent my older sister to you to have both her hips replaced, superbly. In Canada Dr’s. make you feel they are doing you a favour by providing this service, whereby you and your group appreciate you choosing them to make your life better.
It’s now a bit more than 5 years since my knee replacement necessitated due to a skiing accident. The best way to describe the outcome is, I have my life back! I contacted my surgeon in Colorado in June of 2020 and had my surgery that September. My wait time in Canada was 18 months just to see a surgeon. His office was most helpful, advising me on what needed to be done on my part before surgery. They promptly answered any questions that arose. The day of surgery went incredibly smoothly. The pre-op-nurses were very attentive and addressed any concerns and questions. They definitely know what they’re doing. There was a concern I wouldn’t have access to food at my hotel due to my late discharge from the clinic. They arranged for me to take food and drink with me. As a long distance patient, the thoroughness of post surgery check ups were not compromised. All calls were scheduled and reassuring. The surgeon also checked in with me and was always available by text to answer questions. I still text the odd time with questions and he always responds. That would never happen here in Canada. As an active individual, I am in the gym regularly, do Pilates, and go for long walks. Needless to say I am thrilled with my outcome. The results exceeded all my expectations.
After a year of getting nowhere in the Canadian health system I decided to investigate options abroad. It was through that research that I discovered the anterior approach to hip replacement, and all the benefits which are associated with it. This was the path I knew I had to travel. The only question was, where to go for the surgery. A friend of a friend referred me to a practice in Colorado. His experience was exemplary and he could not say enough positive things about his experience. As he himself was a physician, this carried significant weight with me. From the time I contacted the office, to the time I was on the surgery table, was 1 month. The operation went off without issue and I was up and walking and back in my hotel room resting comfortably that evening...in and out in one day, and walking! There were several things that genuinely surprised me about the entire experience. First was the overall lack of pain. As I had learned, part of their focus is to allow the patient to heal as pain free as possible, and through some impressive local analgesics and other techniques I was able to go about my recovery without the need of any pain killers such as Oxycontin or codeine. Instead, a few Advil was sufficient to manage a few aches through the first week, and after that I did not need any additional pain relief. This was very welcome indeed. The speed of recovery was quite impressive as well. I was into physio after 2 weeks and very mobile by that time. My physiotherapist, in Canada, see’s only posterior replacement. He was amazed at the speed of recovery, often referring to me as the ‘poster child’ for hip replacement surgery. Since the muscles are not cut, the speed of recovery is increased substantively. Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, I was impressed with the exceptional care provided by his office and the surgery center. Being from Canada, I have never experienced a health care environment such as this where the doctors and nurses are all up-beat, enjoying their day, and passing all that positive energy on to those around them, and most importantly their patients. Moreover, I was contacted directly several times after the surgery by my surgeon himself to check on how I was doing. For a Canadian, care at that level is not something we are used to at all, and it is greatly appreciated. The cost is rather insignificant when you take it in the context of what you get back. Several years of your life are gained back. All the experiences and activities that go along with that are gained back. And for some, even your livelihood and employment are not placed in jeopardy. It’s the smartest money I’ve ever spent, and I can say unequivocally that should the need arise again, I will not waste time in the Canadian system...I will be contacting my surgeon in Colorado directly.
I want to thank Doc and team for the excellent job that was done on my hip replacement. I was able get back to all my physical activities (skiing, hockey, mtb, etc.) in much less time than was the case with my left hip which was done by the posterior approach. I have been able to get back into shape, and am now stronger & fitter than ever. It amazes me how well the joint has recovered, and I couldn’t be happier with my decision to have had the procedure.
After twelve years of gradually worsening knee pain and countless injections that never lasted, I had nearly given up on living an active life. Multiple orthopaedic surgeons in Canada were unable to offer me any viable path forward, suggesting that I just accept the situation until later in life, when they would perform a full knee replacement on both knees. From my very first consultation, Dr. Loucks stood apart — patient, thorough, and compassionate in a way that made me feel genuinely cared for. In December 2023, he performed my double knee custom patellofemoral replacement, and the entire journey from surgery through recovery was handled with outstanding professionalism. Today I’m back playing tennis and golf multiple times a week, and I truly cannot overstate it — Dr. Loucks gave me my life back.
